Sliding the Line

(Published September 2013)

Charlie and Denny Dupree are young brothers, typical in every way except one: they have a special gift, one Charlie desperately wants to keep secret. They use their power to play a game they created called Slide the Line, played with marbles and dominoes out in the driveway of their suburban home in Hemming. But Denny is testing the waters, using his power to create more destruction than Charlie can bear.

As Charlie wrestles with his own insidious desire to explore the boundaries of his exceptional ability, he fights the urge to share his secret with a young girl who tries to free him from his solitary nature. These special boys must discover the mysterious origins of their talent and learn the responsibilities of wielding the powerful weapon they both possess.

"Lush and suspenseful"- Jack D.

"really great, very believable, lots of 'small town' sense, and well fleshed characters" -Marc O.

"An original story by a new but talented author." -David R.

Gina Starkweather lives in Hemming, a rural Tennessee town where thirteen children die each year from snakebite. It has been an expected phenomenon for nearly twenty years, and only the victims' mothers suspect why. They wouldn't have had children at all, had a stranger not appeared and promised them the gift of life.

These desperate mothers finally bore children without knowing their offspring would never reach adulthood.

It has been written off as myth, a local legend that speaks of one called the Keeper of Serpents who comes in the night with his army of snakes to claim those born under the stranger's contract before their eighteenth birthday. When Gina learns of her own mother's deal with Death, she and her brother set out to find the Keeper before her time runs out.
